What are the main ingredients in Thermacell products?
Our products contain active ingredients that repel mosquitoes and inactive ingredients that help release them into the air. The repellent cartridges in our refillable platform use metofluthrin as the active repellent ingredient. Fuel-powered repellents use allethrin as the active ingredient.
Are Thermacell products considered toxic?
The Thermacell product can be toxic to mosquitoes if they are within the zone of protection. Scientific data on our ingredients indicate that, when used as directed, the Thermacell product should not pose a risk to people or pets. Thermacell's extensive documentation is thoroughly reviewed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and multiple regulatory agencies worldwide during the product approval process. You should always use the product according to the label instructions.
Are Thermacell ingredients safe?
All our formulations and active ingredients have been evaluated considering possible human, animal, and environmental exposure scenarios. The data supporting these evaluations have been thoroughly reviewed and accepted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and by multiple regulatory bodies worldwide. Therefore, their use is authorized when used as directed.
Can I wear a Thermacell repellent?
Thermacell products should be used as directed on the label. This does not include wearing the repellent during use. Thermacell products work best when placed on a flat surface and may not be as effective if worn.
Accessories that allow the repellent to be attached to the body are intended for transporting the device only. Our products should not be worn while in the holster or with the clip, as the devices reach temperatures of 385 °F (196 °C).
Our products work best when placed flat on a surface, with the heating plate facing upwards. This is the optimal position for the device to effectively heat and dispense the repellent. If you wear the device and it is in an upright position, it does not effectively heat the repellent mat; only about 50% is heated. The clip and holster are intended for hands-free transport of the device only.
Is it safe to use Thermacell near my vegetable garden?
Our tests have shown that the amount of active ingredient deposited on surfaces near a Thermacell device is below what even sophisticated scientific instruments can measure, less than one billionth of a gram per cm². However, in cases where the product is used near fruit and vegetable crops, we recommend as good practice to thoroughly wash produce before consumption.
Is Thermacell repellent safe for children?
There are no use restrictions by the EPA or other regulatory agencies for use around children. Scientific data on our ingredients indicate that if used as directed on the label, it should not pose any risk to people or pets.
Thermacell's extensive reports are thoroughly reviewed by the U.S. EPA and multiple regulatory agencies worldwide during the product approval process. Can Thermacell products be used near campfires or open fires?
Thermacell repellents can be used near campfires or bonfires. For safety, we recommend that repellents be at least three feet from the fire. Performance may also be affected if the repellent gets too hot.
Are Thermacell repellents harmful to wildlife and bees?
The U.S. EPA and WHO have concluded that there is reasonable certainty of no harm to bees or other terrestrial wildlife if the product is used according to label directions.
The mosquito repellent vapors produced by our product disperse quickly into the air, and very little of the repellent ingredient falls onto surfaces such as nearby foliage where bees might land. In addition, our mosquito products are most often used in the late afternoon or evening, when bees are returning to their hive; the same is true for butterflies and other foraging insects.
If you keep bees, avoid using the repellent in the immediate vicinity of the hives.
Is it safe to use a Thermacell device near food?
There are no restrictions on the use of our products in gardens or in any place where food is served. Please ensure that you always use the product according to the label instructions.
Can I use rechargeable repellents near water or a fish pond?
The U.S. EPA and WHO have concluded that there is reasonable certainty that no harm to the environment will result from the use of the product. We will present additional data to the EPA, which we hope will allow us to be clearer in the future about the safety of the products near water.
As a good practice, we recommend using battery-powered Thermacell repellents 10 feet away from a body of water and 8 feet away if using the Multi Insect repellent. Thermacell products should not be applied to water according to label instructions.
Thank you.
How do prallethrin and allethrin differ?
Prallethrin belongs to the same family as allethrin (the repellent used in fuel-powered repellents). It has been shown to be effective not only against mosquitoes, but also against black flies and midges.
Why isn't my refill full?
The amount of fluid in each rechargeable cartridge varies depending on the number of hours of protection. In our larger cartridges, a 40-hour refill will be completely full, while a 36-hour refill will have slightly less fluid. In our smaller cartridges, the 18-hour refill will be approximately half full, the 12-hour refill will be approximately a quarter full, and the 8-hour refill will be just under a quarter full. How do I turn on my device?
Watch this helpful video to learn how to use your device and discover other practical tips. Please note that due to environmental factors, the replacement pad may change color before the anticipated four hours. Continue to use it until the full four hours have passed.
What types of mosquitoes do Thermacell products repel?
Thermacell products repel various species of mosquitoes. We have tested our product against the West African mosquito, the Asian tiger mosquito, and the yellow fever mosquito, and have found it to be effective against all of them. If you are traveling to regions where malaria is present, we recommend that you consult with your doctor about malaria prophylaxis before you depart.
Can I use Thermacell when it's raining?
Do not expose Thermacell devices or mats to rain. Their effectiveness may be reduced. If your Thermacell device gets wet, make sure it is completely dry inside and out before using it again.
Can I use Thermacell in windy conditions?
If it's windy, position the device facing away from you, so the wind carries the repellent towards the area you want to protect. Thermacell may be less effective on very windy days, although mosquitoes typically don't come out when it's very windy.
Can I use Thermacell repellents indoors?
Thermacell products are for outdoor use only and should not be used indoors. Always follow the instructions for use on the label.
Can I use Thermacell products at high altitude?
Our products have the following altitude limitations:
- Pad and fuel products, such as the Portable, Lantern, and Mini Halo diffusers, have an altitude limitation of 1,200 meters.
- The Backpacker product has an altitude limitation of 2,100 meters.
We hope this helps answer your question. Feel free to contact us if you have any other queries.
Can I bring Thermacell products on a plane?
Thermacell fuel-powered or mat-powered products cannot be carried on passenger aircraft. We generally recommend that you carry your Thermacell repellent and mats with you, but purchase the fuel cartridges at your destination, if possible.

What is the best way to use a fuel-powered device in cold temperatures?
For best results with fuel-powered devices in temperatures between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, elevate the top of the device, the end with the viewer, one inch while it is operating, so that the device is tilted.
What is the size of the protection zone for fuel-powered products?
Thermacell fuel-powered repellents provide effective mosquito repellency in an area up to 15 x 15 feet, which is 225 square feet, approximately the size of an average deck or patio. You can use more devices to protect larger areas.
Troubleshooting
Why has my fuel-powered device stopped working?
The fuel supply may be empty. If the fuel cartridge needs to be replaced, turn off the unit and replace the cartridge according to the product instructions.
If the fuel cartridge does not need to be replaced, switch the on/off button to the on position and allow the gas to flow for 2 minutes before pressing the start button. This will purge the device and often correct the issue.
If the product still does not work properly after trying the above steps, please contact customer service so we can assist you with a repair, replacement, or refund. A receipt will be required for a refund.
Troubleshooting
Why isn’t my Backpacker repellent working?
Make sure you screw the Backpacker completely upright. Do not hold it tilted, as the gas cartridge can generate condensation if held at an angle. This can affect the regulator.
Afterward, make sure you fully screw the device onto the gas cartridge, hand-tightening it.
Then, turn on the device and listen for gas flow. If you hear the sound of gas escaping, leave it for about 20 seconds, and then press the igniter several times.
If it still doesn't work, let us know, and we will take the next steps to replace the device. Thank you.
Troubleshooting
Why isn’t my refill full?
The amount of liquid in each refill varies based on the number of hours of protection. In our larger cartridges, a 40-hour refill will be completely full, while a 36-hour refill will have slightly less liquid. In our smaller cartridges, the 18-hour one will be about half full, the 12-hour one will be about a quarter full, and the 8-hour one will be just under a quarter full. Click here for a visual chart of all refill levels.
What do I do if my refill leaks?
If your refill is leaking, please wipe any repellent residue from the device with a cloth or paper towel. The refill should still be suitable for use in your repellent device.
Why did my mats turn white too early?
The mats have two chemicals. The first chemical is the repellent. The second chemical is a time-release blue dye. In some cases, the blue dye may fade quickly, but the repellent remains on the mat for the full 3–4 hours.
Our testing shows that after 4 hours, 25% still remains on the mat. You can leave the mats in even if they turn white earlier than expected. The environment can also cause this to occur: heat, humidity, wind, and altitude.
We recommend leaving them in for the full 3–4 hours, even if they appear to be turning white. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you.
Why is my mat discolored?
It is normal for a used mat to be dark brown on the bottom and almost white on the top.
